Per the 1880 US Census, Reuben was single, living in Collin county, TX, on the farm of Daniel and Jane MCLAREN, Daniel of Scotland, Jane of Arkansas, and Daniel's brother John, also of Scotland. There is a Census category that indicated that Daniel is "maimed, crippled, bedridden or otherwise disabled". It is not known if Reuben was a tenent farmer, or working as a farm hand on the McLaren farm.

The question remains, why did Reuben leave an extensive family in Illinois, and come to Texas? Was there trouble he left behind, or did he simply leave for more opportunity in a new area?

Cavalry Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co "H" of that Regiment, for the months of Jan. & Feb. (first on file), 1863, he is reported Deserted February 3, 1863 at Frankfort KY. March & April 1863 Deserted Feb 3, 63 returned March 4, 63 on detached service in Louisville KY. May & June 1863 present. Restored to duty with loss of all pay & allowances up to March 4, 1863 by S.O. No. 22 issued by Genl. R.S. Granger June 26, 1863. July & August 1863 present. Tried by Court Martial for desertion, judgement pending. Sept & Oct. 1863 present. Forfeits all pay and allowances from Feb. 3, 1863 to March 4, 1863. sentence of G.C.M. (General Court Martial).
